Material lot splitting: container traceability and mass balance
Create distinct child-container identities linked to the parent and split event, then account for children, samples, residual material and evidenced losses. The 10.000 kg example explains 9.980 kg and leaves 0.020 kg unresolved. Keep that difference visible instead of inventing a balancing waste entry.

The children account for 9.900 kg, not the full source quantity. Including the sample and residual leaves 0.020 kg, or 20 g, unexplained. Record that difference for review. Do not create an invented waste event merely to make the balance equal zero.

Agree the mass basis before adding the numbers.
Use net mass throughout this balance. Adding a child’s gross weight to the parent’s net quantity brings packaging into only one side of the equation. Keep the source gross and tare observations where they exist, and establish which value the destination quantity field represents. Record a unit conversion explicitly when a balance exports grams but inventory uses kilograms.
Keep the pre-split observation and each post-split observation separately identifiable. Reading the current parent quantity later would substitute 0.030 kg for the original 10.000 kg. The balance must use the observations belonging to SPL-204, not whatever values the container displays today.
Create the children once and retain the parent residual.
Create child identities for the three new physical containers and connect each to C-204 and SPL-204. A repeated scan of C-204-B should return the existing child in this operation. If a later operation splits C-204-B again, create a new split event and a new generation of children; do not replace its original parent.
C-204 still holds 0.030 kg. Keep it identifiable in its actual location until a later use, transfer or disposal is recorded. Marking the parent empty because child labels were printed would remove material that is still physically present. The laboratory sample is its own destination and must not also be counted as waste.
Show the difference without deciding its cause.
The proposed calculation is 10.000 − (4.000 + 3.500 + 2.400 + 0.050 + 0.030) = 0.020 kg. Decide with the process owner how recorded precision, weighing uncertainty and any established handling allowances affect review. This guide supplies no universal acceptable percentage for a material split.
If the operator later finds a supported transcription error or a measured loss, link the correction to its evidence and retain the earlier observation. A positive difference is an investigation input. A negative difference also needs attention: the records appear to create more material than the source contained. Neither case should be silently absorbed into a child quantity.
Reconstruct the net masses and follow the next generation.
Keep the measurement basis beneath each net quantity. A fictional ticket for C-204-A might show 4.180 kg gross and 0.180 kg tare, giving 4.000 kg net. A ticket for C-204-B might show 3.720 kg gross and 0.220 kg tare, giving 3.500 kg net. Those are supporting observations for the worked values, not additional quantities to include in the split balance. Capture the actual container-specific tare rather than copying a nominal empty-container value without evidence.
The 20 g residual deserves a measurement and handling assessment. Check source transcription, the population of destinations and whether their measurements are comparable before choosing a response. Reporting resolution alone does not establish measurement uncertainty or a permitted loss. If the responsible reviewer accepts a residual under the actual procedure, retain the numerical difference and the supporting decision; an accepted assessment does not turn unexplained material into measured waste.
For a separate follow-on event, suppose C-204-A later splits into A1 of 2.000 kg and A2 of 1.950 kg with 0.050 kg remaining in A. That event balances its own 4.000 kg source. The original SPL-204 must still show C-204-A receiving 4.000 kg, while a current-inventory view follows A’s descendants and residual. Summing both A’s historical 4.000 kg and its descendants as current stock would count the same material twice.

Does each child container need a new material lot?
A new physical-container identity does not automatically mean a new material lot. Retain the material identity and parent relationship according to the operation. The split event explains the new containers without breaking their genealogy.
What happens to material left in the parent?
Keep the parent container and its measured residual identifiable. Record any later use or disposal as a new event. Printing child labels does not establish that the source container is empty.

Use a clear missing-data result when a required child weight is absent; zero is a real quantity and must not stand for an unrecorded weight.
A proposed completion Check can require unique child references, a common quantity basis, source evidence and an assessed difference. Keep an incomplete split record available for resolving missing observations. Configure material-use decisions separately: publishing a split reconciliation does not by itself release the children or change physical inventory in another system.

Input: Include S-204-01 both as a sample and as part of a waste total.
Expected: The review exposes the duplicate destination evidence; the accepted balance counts that material once.
A label is printed again
Input: Repeat the C-204-B label action for SPL-204.
Expected: The existing child remains the one physical container. No extra 3.500 kg child is added to the balance.
The parent quantity changes later
Input: Record a subsequent disposal of the 0.030 kg parent residual.
Expected: The historical SPL-204 balance still uses its measured residual observation; the later disposal has its own event.

Identify the parent, material lot and split event. Retain the actual pre-split quantity, gross/tare/net basis, unit, instrument, operator and time. Do not use the parent’s later residual as the original source quantity.
List each physical child identity and net quantity. Record the sample, remaining parent material and any independently evidenced loss separately. Link every destination to this split event; a reprinted label must resolve to its existing child.
Reconcile the pre-split source with children, sample, residual and supported losses. Record the unexplained quantity. Check measurement basis, duplicate destinations, transcription and handling evidence before assessing it under the actual procedure.
If a child is split again, identify the new event and its own source/destinations. State whether the query answers historical transfer or current stock. For current stock, avoid counting both a parent’s historical quantity and the quantities now held by its descendants.
Give separate conclusions for identity traceability, quantity reconciliation and permission to use the children. Link any assessed residual, correction or later disposal to its evidence and responsible owner. Preserve the original split’s history.

Evidence needed to finish
Each destination is uniquely identified, the event balance is reproducible and a later generation is traceable without double-counting current stock. Quantity differences and material-use decisions have their own evidence. Complete child labels do not imply that either assessment is complete.
