Summary
- In short
- Apprentice’s MES is built for processes that change during the run, with ad hoc recipe changes, redlining, parameterised templates and one-click technology transfer, plus AI agents that act across manufacturing systems. Seal keeps lab, manufacturing and quality on one record model, releases lasting changes as tested process versions, and uses Neil to prepare changes for people to approve.
- When it fits
- You run clinical or advanced-therapy manufacturing with frequent mid-run changes, need sponsors and partners working inside the platform, or want an AI product that acts across your existing systems.
- When Seal fits
- You want batch records, laboratory results and quality events on one set of records, each site’s readiness assessed before a transferred process runs there, and Neil preparing changes with their tests for your team to approve.
1Apprentice and Seal, side by side.
Apprentice and Seal both set up manufacturing workflows on a configurable platform, and both put an AI agent next to GMP manufacturing work. They differ in how far a change can go during a run and where the agent stops. Apprentice’s MES lets subject-matter experts change recipes and parameters in the middle of a batch, and its AI agents can act across manufacturing systems.¹² In Seal, teams configure lab, manufacturing and quality workflows on one platform around a shared ontology, releases each improvement as a tested new process version, and keeps its agent, Neil, out of GMP execution.

2What Apprentice is built for.
Apprentice is built for manufacturers whose processes change often, such as clinical and advanced-therapy production, contract manufacturing and multi-site networks.³⁴ The company has also traded as Apprentice.io, and released its MES as Tempo.⁵ Apprentice FS, Inc. is based in Jersey City, New Jersey, and was co-founded in 2014 by Angelo Stracquatanio, Gary Pignata and Alexandra Buttke.⁶⁷ It now calls itself “The Manufacturing AI Company” and names Moderna, Catalent and Gilead among the manufacturers that use its platform.⁷ It still uses the Tempo name in places, such as its security and integration pages.⁸⁹
Its Manufacturing Suite has these parts:⁷
- A manufacturing execution system, in which subject-matter experts author and modify recipes in a no-code Designer Mode with drag-and-drop steps, parallel paths, branching and enforcement rules.¹
- A laboratory execution system for QC testing with no-code procedures and integrated sample management.¹
- A Connected Manufacturing Network for running production across internal sites and external partners, with sponsor access and technology transfer.⁴
- R&D and manufacturing intelligence from Ganymede, a lab and process data platform Apprentice acquired in January 2026.¹⁰
- AI agents embedded across the suite, and A1, a standalone AI product launched in April 2026.²
Apprentice’s agents cover roles such as operator, quality, MSAT, supervisor, engineering, maintenance and supply chain; A1 creates CAPAs, deviations and reports for people to review, and responds to alarms, events, schedules and file changes.¹¹ Apprentice says A1 runs on its own large language model trained on manufacturing data, sits above existing systems and acts on what it finds rather than only advising.² It also says its agents operate within rule-based boundaries, with humans as the final decision-makers for GMP-related actions, and that a system administrator controls who can use AI features.⁸
Apprentice says it meets cGxP standards and 21 CFR Part 11, is certified to ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II, ships updates on a predictable quarterly schedule and provides IQ/OQ validation; it says sites can go live in 90 days.⁸¹ Its Tempo 7.5 release in April 2025 added step imports across procedure templates, integrations with Veeva SOPs and Blue Mountain calibration records, and configurable controls separating exceptions from reviewable quality data.⁵
3How a recipe changes during a run.
Both platforms let authorised people depart from the plan during a batch and keep that departure on the record. Apprentice builds mid-run change into execution; Seal records each departure as its own path beside the planned course and sends lasting changes through a new process version.
Apprentice’s MES supports Batch Run Modification: ad hoc recipe changes, dynamic parameter updates and mid-run iteration without halting production. Redlining captures clinical changes as they happen, steps can be marked not applicable in real time, and Batch Parameter Groups run several products from one parameterised template.¹ Apprentice describes this as dynamic execution rather than rigid scripts, suited to clinical manufacturing with small batches, last-minute protocol edits and sponsor requirements.¹³
In Seal, every abnormal path is part of the configured process: correction, deviation, rework, repeat, abort and not-applicable work each have their own permissions, rationale, evidence and approval rules. If an urgent change must apply to live work, authorised users define the transition point and approve the additional instructions, and both the original and the changed course remain visible. A change meant to last becomes a new process version with its specifications, test evidence and approvals. When a batch is created, Seal resolves the version that applies for its product, site, market and start date, records it, and does not let a later change rewrite work in progress.
4How a process moves between sites.
Both platforms reuse one process definition across sites. Apprentice moves the product package between sites in one step; Seal keeps the proposal, each executed batch and each receiving site’s readiness as separate records.
Apprentice’s Connected Manufacturing Network keeps golden recipes centrally, distributes standardised templates and allows parameters to vary by site. Its One-Click Tech Transfer moves product packages of recipes, resources, parameters and master data between sites, with traceability and audit trails across the transfer, and sponsors and partners can be given view-only or interactive access to batch reviews and approvals. For new sites, Apprentice describes configuring and validating the first site, then activating the others together with parallel configuration and PQ.⁴¹
In Seal, the example in the PLM blueprint follows process family P-014. Development has proposed v05 after a capture study. North site’s batch B-114 ran on v04 and keeps it. South site’s transfer package references v05, but its applicability assessment and local execution checks are not complete, and a transferred definition is not evidence that a site is ready to run it. Asked to prepare the impact review, Neil assesses the two sites separately rather than treating v05 as effective everywhere, and lists the owner’s next action for each record: the process development lead attaches the study and rationale, the North owner retains B-114’s v04 execution, and the South MSAT lead completes the readiness review.
5Where Apprentice is the better fit.
Apprentice is the better fit when the running batch has to adapt quickly and your network includes external sponsors and partners.
- You run clinical or advanced-therapy manufacturing in which recipes change mid-run, and you want redlining and ad hoc parameter changes in the MES.¹
- You are a contract manufacturer and want sponsors working inside the platform with controlled access to batch reviews and approvals.⁴
- You run many products from parameterised templates and want to move whole product packages between sites.⁴
- You want subject-matter experts to author recipes without IT involvement.¹
- You want an AI product that works across your existing ERP, MES, SCADA and historians without replacing them, and acts on events around the clock.²¹¹
- You want lab data capture from the same vendor, through Ganymede.¹⁰
6Where Seal is the better fit.
Seal is the better fit when lab, manufacturing and quality should share one record, and when the AI should prepare changes rather than act in GMP execution.
- Manufacturing execution, laboratory, quality, training and inventory share one platform and one ontology, so a result, deviation or material lot links to the step it concerns.
- Each improvement is released as a new process version, with its specifications and test evidence. Selected acceptance tests run when a changeset is prepared for review, publication requires current passing results, and earlier runs keep the version they used.
- You want a clear line for AI. Neil works within the requester’s permissions, prepares investigations and configured changes, and never releases a change on its own; nothing it produces takes effect until a qualified person has reviewed it, and AI can be switched off for the whole organisation. In line with the EU’s draft GMP Annex 22 on AI, Neil is not used in GMP execution. It helps set up configuration, which your team verifies and releases under change control.
- You want each site’s readiness, each executed batch’s version and each proposal kept as separate records during technology transfer.
7Running Seal alongside Apprentice.
Seal has no dedicated Apprentice connector. Where another MES stays in place, Seal connects the records a job needs, and each connection’s scope records which system owns them.
Seal’s REST API reads and writes records from another system, and Scripts are versioned Python that can call an external service after an event or on a schedule, edited in a changeset and tested like other Seal records. On its side, Apprentice describes APIs and no-code integrations for ERP, QMS, equipment historians and other systems.³ Start with read access: for example, let Neil read selected batch records into a deviation investigation in Seal, and treat any write-back as a separate decision with its own review gates, as the regulatory guide sets out.
8Moving from Apprentice to Seal.
Move one process first, and keep Apprentice running the rest.
- Choose a process where a recurring exception or a site transfer needs laboratory and quality evidence alongside the batch.
- Bring the procedure or master batch record, a representative batch with its redlines and exceptions, and the records it touches. Use sample material, or arrange an NDA before sharing confidential records.
- Neil proposes the steps, fields, calculations, material and equipment requirements and review gates, and your process experts check the mapping. Once the scope is agreed and the inputs received, Seal prepares the first working configuration and its validation pack within 48 hours.
- Exercise the abnormal paths before release: an urgent change to a live batch, rework, not-applicable steps and signatures.
- Agree which records move and which stay retrievable in Apprentice, and reconcile representative records before you rely on the new workflow.
Production timing then depends on scope, interfaces, migration, operational readiness and your release requirements. The technology transfer blueprint describes how a process moves between sites in Seal.

AQuestions and answers
Is Apprentice.io the same company as Apprentice, and is Tempo still its MES?
Yes. The company, Apprentice FS, Inc., now presents itself mainly as Apprentice, at apprentice.io, and calls itself The Manufacturing AI Company, though its press releases still use Apprentice.io. Its MES was released as Tempo, as in its Tempo 7.5 release in April 2025, and the Tempo name still appears on some of its pages.
Is Seal an alternative to Apprentice?
For some processes, yes. Seal runs manufacturing execution on the same platform as laboratory, quality, training and inventory, and releases each lasting improvement as a tested new process version. Apprentice suits teams that need recipes to change mid-run and sponsors working inside the platform, and the two can run side by side.
How do Apprentice’s AI agents compare with Neil?
Apprentice’s agents and its standalone A1 product create documents such as CAPAs and deviations, respond to events and act across manufacturing systems, within rule-based boundaries that keep humans as final decision-makers for GMP-related actions. In line with the EU’s draft GMP Annex 22 on AI, Neil is not used in GMP execution. It helps set up configuration, which your team verifies and releases under change control.
How does technology transfer compare?
Apprentice’s One-Click Tech Transfer moves recipes, resources, parameters and master data between sites as a package. In Seal, the proposal, each executed batch and each receiving site’s readiness are separate records, so a transferred definition runs at a site only after its applicability and local checks are complete.
How long does it take to start with Seal?
Once the scope is agreed and the inputs received, Seal prepares a first working configuration and its validation pack within 48 hours, built from one of your procedures or master batch records. Production timing then depends on scope, interfaces, migration, operational readiness and your release requirements.
